using a 20kHz solid state switching supply, the primary tank capacitor is
never really going to have time to charge up. The best bet here, especially
since he is a beginner, is just to ditch the supply altogether and get a
standard type NST (60Hz) which can be obtained for almost nothing (or free)
from a local neon supplier.

I think by introducing a rectification network will add a lot of
complexities to the situation that someone working with their first coil
doesn't need right now.

Check your local neon distributors and ask if they have any neon transformer
they want to get rid of. Chances are, you'll get some for free!!!

Hope this helps.

Your not bad off at all, as long as your planing on getting a variac. I
have probably the exact same trasfomrer Integral something or other. I
found a variac that converst 120v to 0-280 volts, that is probable the best
way to go. and i got mine for 15 plus S&H(which doubled the price),
although its only 7 amp rated.
                                good luck with the coil
