For a SSTC coil this would be considered very normal.  For a spark gap
coil, i would say
very abnormal unless you were using a variac very close to the coil
(within a couple of feet).
The fact you say both variacs give you tiny shocks kind of eliminates
the probability of a loose
wire or short internal to the variacs.  So, it may be due to high field.
If thats the case, it may be
because your coil is out of tune.  Slightly out of tune coils tend to
radiate more than tuned coils.
