I would suggest looking at the LANL report by North (it's on Terry's site at
hotstreamer-dot-com).  It has a whole chapter on rectifier design with tables,
etc.

What you don't see much anymore is those old charts showing how much voltage
drop you get with a given load for simple C input or L input filters.
Cheap solid state regulators have probably made this obsolete... it's easier
to just make a higher voltage supply with a ton of ripple and regulate it
down.
