hey Emmett ...

no theories needed...   the problem was the minimal ground ,  by changing 
the grounding structure you basically changed the tune point of the coil 
ust enuf to give you dismal effects..  the racing sparks are another hint 
that secondary grounding is at a minimum...

install a better ground and run it on a low/no wind nite..
