I was talking about an alexanderson alternator. It was used to put
out 17-100 khz voltage before tubes were around (around 1910 irrc,
lost the link).

	Around long into the tube era.  I believe one in Hawaii was in use by
the U.S. Navy until at least the end of WW2.  As I think I mentioned
here earlier, there's still one preserved in Sweden at station SAQ and
it sends signals on special occasions.
