Could anyone recommend a good transformer oil, other than erm.. transformer oil. i.e. how does vegetable oil behave under 12KV? and temperatures.

Vegetable oil can go rancid and really get nasty.

Try to get "mineral" oil (un scented). Mineral oil is sold by farm supply stores for digestive problems in cows for a far better price.
