Series connected IGBTs

Original poster: "S&JY" <youngsters@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>

For those interested in experimenting with series connected IGBTs as a
"sparkless nongap", there are a number of interesting papers available on
the Web. For example, a search for "high voltage switch using series
connect igbts" will result in two very good papers. There are some
interesting gate control techniques that result in good gate drive
characteristics, including short circuit protection. I don't know if they
will work with Sidacs, but they look great for triggering an igbt stack with
external drivers isolated with pulse transformers or fiber optics.

Series connected igbts are being used more and more as klystron modulators
for particle accelerators. No doubt Greg Leyh could supply us with the best
references that are applicable to "modulating" Tesla coils.

By the way Greg, if you read this, please let us know how your twin scaled
down SSTC demonstration project is progressing.
