   The issue, as correctly identified, is:
      is that the 'standoff'/withstand,
      or the tripping/clipping
    voltage.

    If its the tripping voltage its too low for 120/140VAC RMS
    work...

   Depending on the size of the handful, one might fuse one, and
   crank up the variac, allowing for peak to RMS etc (eg 140RMS,
   peaks around 208, etc....)
