Is that brilliant white light at the base of the coil coming from the spark gap, or was capacitor that hot just prior to its demise? ;-)

Over current is my guess...

I would think the "peak current" might have blown an internal strap interconnecting the sections.

Or...  The "RMS current" overheated the whole thing and blew the case apart.

You could probably figure it out by digging into the remains...

Better get an MMC ;-))

Was the crack of the case of the 50 KV Maxwell
caused by internal failure or a drop on the concrete?
