Cameron -

When you add a "second layer" to each of the windings on the core, how will the second layer be physically configured? The far end of the first layer brought straight back to the beginning of the first layer, then the second layer wound over the first in the same winding direction? Or something else? Also, when I saw the eBay listing I was pretty sure that your "solid brass egg" would not end up to be "solid", as 99% of the inexpensive brass decorative and novelty items are castings from India, and are hollow to save material. You may have to drill a small hole in one end and fill the thing with tin (lead-free plumber's solder) to get the weight distribution right so it will stand up and stabilize. With the hollow casting, you don't know how uniform the wall thickness is.

It might be interesting to see if the egg will stabilize when spun up mechanically. Set one end of the egg in the inner race of a de-greased ball-bearing, and chuck a small suction cup, short piece of 1" dia rubber hose, or something similar into an electric drill and use it to spin up the egg and see if its balanced well enough to spin on its long axis at 1200 or 1500 RPM. If not, then some sort of filler will probably be needed.

Scott Hanson

Hey guys,

I was able to power up the egg last night and after figuring out I had one
pair of coils out of phase, I got it working. The egg spins up as you can
see here:

http://www.teslauniverse.com/images/egg_of_columbus/MOV00628.MPG

Notice the egg spins, but never stands all the way upright. I am not certain
whether this is due to lack of field strength or if it's caused by the
hollow egg's poor center of gravity. I am going to wind another layer of
12AWG on each coil and see if it improves. I'm looking for another egg too.
