'Friend in another town with 5kva  pig' does not say much. Any pig 
can be ballasted down to nearly zip. When you try to process a lot of 
power with any gap, rotary or fixed. You find that quenching starts 
to become a big issue. Typically you crank up power to the pig "just 
a tiny bit more"  and all of the sudden your spark length drops to 
almost nothing.
