Re: [TCML] IGBT 1200V, 54A

They do make single SCR's which are a drop in replacement for a spark gap, though cost $2000 or more. They can even build them to what ever spec you want. They will take 1000's of amps easily and they smallest voltage is 8KV. If anyone is going to invest in something of that amount, then just buy the proper kit.. I would buy one if I had a few $1000 spare ;-)

It's 'money'!!

Everyone wants an SISG coil. But they don't want to pay $1500 for it!! You can't find those old golden IGBTs in the trash can. You have to go out and spend hard cash there. And like all that solid state stuff, it can be gone in a puff of smoke! Not a game for the feint of heart...

But electronically, it's 'voltage'. If there were a 30kV single IGBT out there, it would be 'one' easy section. Current (even when low) can be handled if we have the voltage.

So far, I think I am the only one to blow an SISG in an un-related experiment years ago. Phil's primary strike is not there yet ;-) But Finn and others have had zero problems with SISG silicon failures from what I have heard back.

After Phil's work, it seems like the IGBT heating might not be nearly as bad. If they run very cool, we can spend far less money on the IGBT devices :D

As far as use in a SISG tank circuit, what IGBT parameter do you feel is the limiting factor: voltage, or pulse current? Aside from damage from a primary strike, has anyone reported IBGT failure during "normal" operation?

Possibly, but after Phil's testing the extra thermal mass may not be needed. The OLD IGBT was the largest available because we did not know any better. A much smaller IGBT may do perfectly fine.

Cheers, Finn hammer"

I still lurk here and make comments when time permits ;-)

Hi Terry, Et Al,

At such a cost differential, couldn't a design be made that doubles the IGBT
parts count (sorry, not my bailey wick)?

It only has 1/2 the die area but at that price it is worth a try. It is not like the big ones are blowing up. IR is quoting $28.75 for the IRGPS60B120KDP these days!!

Hi All,

I found a possible replacement for the IRGPS60B120KDP discrete (sisg application).

Fairchild's HGTG18N120BND looks similar and price is $8.67 ea at Newark, $5.25 at Digikey, $5.20 at Mouser.
