Yes, i did those types of comparison tests at various break rates, etc, and found the best "efficiency" at 120 bps. I was limited in space so I wasn't able to run all that much power. So I stated at the time that since I couldn't make comparisons at the higher powers, I couldn't comment on those situations. And yes, I had to include coils built by others to validate my formula, since I couldn't operate at those higher power levels. At the time, folks were using a linear measurement of 500 watts per foot of spark. I think this came about because most small coils seemed to be rather inefficient in those days. Once I was able to build more efficient small coils, and compare them with various large coils built by others, I saw that the square law was involved. After that it was just a matter of choosing the right coefficient (1.7) to directly relate input
power to spark length.  That is the story of how I came up with the
formula.

I'll include the formula here for anyone who is not familiar with it.

 spark length (inches) = 1.7*sqrt input power (wallplug watts)

John, I apparently missed this detail about the formula. I remember wh en you performed various testing (keeping around 1050W for comparison purposes) and I know you also ran obvious 120 bps as well as higher break rates (up near 400 bps?). In my mind, my conclusion was that with the coils "you" personally tested, 120 bps gave best results. From that is where my conclusion was derived. But if other coils are also included during the formulation sequence, then excellent! This was something I was not aware of.
