For general purpose, you can't beat a good used old powerstat/staco/volt-pac (GE) unit. These will be used, in a variety of conditions and prices, from ebay.

You can also get one of the big shiny red ones from China, but while I have no experience with them, I would still prefer a used American unit.

Something around 10 amps is useful, and can be pushed to 20 amps or higher when the need arises. This will derate the 100% duty cycle time by a certain percentage, which you can find on the manufacturers data page. Here is one such diagram for certain Staco units:

As with anything on ebay, it helps to watch them for awhile to get a feel for price. Stay away from some of the more overpriced (DR) sellers.
