Probably not in California (at least not from the big utilities like SCE, LADWP, PG&E, or SDG&E).. they "dispose" of their transformers to appropriate certificate holding hazardous waste disposal and recycling companies. The "crade to grave" responsibility for all parties who have touched hazmat makes them quite leery. They're not interested in transferring something that might at some future date wind up providing the grist for "Erin Brockovich II: the Return of the Lawyers", even if they did everything by the book.

Now, those recycling folks *might* sell you a core, since they're in the business of stripping down to scrap, but they're sort of weird companies to deal with. They too have the "crade to grave" responsibility to manage.
