Heck, bare AWG12 or AWG14 works fine for a NST powered coil. The loss from using something that small instead of say AWG6, is quite small.

Layout is more critical because the small diameter means that you need to be careful about spacing it from something else so it doesn't spark over. Keep it an inch from stuff, and you'll be ok.

For initial fooling around, I use AWG12 and pieces of foamcore to hold it up.
