Hi Miles M.,

The detuned output refers to the resonant frequency of the secondary LC system in relation to the primary LC system. Most coilers will actually run their systems detuned anywhere from 3% to even 13% or more. That's not a problem. Often, the primary will need a little more L to account for spark loading. To the right of the output identifies if the primary inductance is high or low. You want to be detuned high on primary inductance (which is equivalent to a "lower" primary frequency).

If your detuned in the other direction (low on primary L thus a higher primary frequency), then it is usually a problem. The reason is that as spark loading occurs (and of course only occurs during sparking), the secondary system becomes even more detuned (the secondary frequency lowers) and thus the difference between frequencies is made even larger (the system further detunes itself during running). And sure enough, it acts like any other system that is running out of tune (racing sparks, sporadic sparks, etc..).

This is why it is important to tune the coil manually to "fine tune" how the coil performs in it's location. Programs are great to design by, look at what-if situations, and perform crosscheck routines, but manually tuning is the only way to get the coil performing at it's peak.

I found the post below of interest as I had to recalculate my design due to only having a 20" secondary winding instead of 22". Unfortunately, I already had the primary built along with the topload. Originally I had a computed denture of 4.21% high, but now the best I can compute is in the low 50% range. Is this "detuned"? Or an awful denture that I should consider starting over?

For what it's worth, I run my coil in my garage or driveway.  It's only 0.9KW input power, so much less output power, though I don't know exactly how much less or how to measure it.   As long as I don't run it in some sort of awful detuned mode, I have zero interference with household electronics.
