Re: [TCML] [UPDATE] Tesla Coil Computer Interference

Glad something I contributed was useful.

I've been wrapping my I/Os in ferrite since my QRO ham days...

Today I got my microBrute working for the wife for her class. Little thing throws out 18" sparks. I figured - cute little coil. The kids are going to love it.

Then I took out a fluorescent bulb. Durned thing lit the fluorescent bulb from nearly 5' away. Lots and lots of EM coming out of it. Even more than my 15/210 coil...which I'm guessing puts more of its energy into sparks than invisible EMP. Either that or I'm too cautious to get close enough to let any bulb light up. Don't want to get near those sparks.

But in any case, I'm noticing tiny sparkles between various metal-to-metal contacts in the garage when I run the little coil.
If it's inducing enough voltage on random items to cause sparking at a few feet away, I'm guessing it can induce currents in computer I/O at similar distances, which keeps me buying ferrite beads and cores at the local surplus store. I figure at worst, some day I'll get my 1KW HF amp back on the air, and I'll be glad the day I do it and completely forget I've already put beads on everything.

Cheers,
Joe
