Re: [TCML] just a thought

If I had to build a rotary gap on a budget and couldn't afford G-10 Id look around for some old Melmac dinner plates, epoxy them together with a layer of fiberglass in between and bolt that together with some brass threaded rod or cut bolts for the electrodes and turn them down right in your rsg on the mandrel it is mounted on. You could fashion a nice cutting tool out of an old file and use a wooden block as your tool rest. Those old plastic/plates took a lot of heat , were indestructible, and had similar heat tolerance as Bakelite. In fact I even managed to burn one once and it smelled a lot like Bakelite. Now I am not sure about it's RF performance characteristics but since Bakelite was used in a lot of old time transmitters think it might be acceptable. Just throwing some ideas out there at ya, Good luck with your budget coil. At any rate I would not use CD's that would be a disaster waiting to happen.

Dear Reverend.

I understand your point on working on next to no budget, but as you are
- accordng to your website - not located on a remote island with nothing
but stones and sand you still might as well dig better materials an methods
of using them. A good approach for using material for a RSG that lacks
the neccessery strength for the job, is to make use of a metal ring on an
insulating hub., so the requirements of the task are shared among two
materials which are each suitable of withstanding the forces involved.
Make the hub from any insulator you like and attach a metal disk ( kitchen
plate, smal rim, tin lid... both simple to find and there you go...

my 2 cents for your winter project

Christoph Bohr

Well, obtaining the proven heat-resistant raw material will always be
the ideal, however, I'm working with little to no budget. So it will
for now, what's laying around, and raiding of the junk box.
Input appreciated, though. :)

Dear Christopher
Instead of spending valuable time to build a rotary disc out of a bundle
of
CD`s, I would rather obtain the proven, heat resistant raw material,
with
the required mechanical and electrical strength and the right thickness
and
the raw dimension for machining the right diameter. Guaranteed less
effort
to obtain the functioning, perfect, safe result.
Fritz

As I was waiting for the end of this morning's, eh, constitutional, I
was
thinking... I have a bunch of old CD's laying around... if I were to
sand
the silver coating off, and glue 3 or 4 of them together, (properly
centered
of course), would it be suitable as the rotor in a rotary spark gap for
a
low-power SG coil ???

Has anyone actually tried this? Just a thought, so no biggie if it's
goofy.
