Some low frequency notes don't always like to make long sparks. This is coil size, midi data, and pw dependent, but you'll see that in most coils. Usually there is a range of frequency that will run great for each coil and thus with some midi editing you can change the songs octave into a range that you determine works best for your coil setup and try to keep those long sparks going throughout the tune.

In this video (playing Led Zeppelins Black Mountain Side) if you look closely at when only low base notes are played the sparks get smaller (maybe not the best video to show that). You can also hear some areas where 3 or 4 notes are attempting to be played at the same time which makes it a nasty sound. Thus, some midi editing could help all that out (if I weren't so lazy).
