Re: [TCML] Re: Coil Died

Hi Brian, all,

I remember back in my early days of coiling (very early '90s) that I smoked many an NST. This was back when info on filtering was very sketchy, SSTCs were still relegated to very limited size and power,(DRSSTCs weren't even here yet) and I'm not sure Terry filters were even known about yet. Once I graduated to pole pigs around the turn of the century, I really no longer had any desire to mess with those fragile and emasculated NSTs any more. Curiosity did finally push me to try to repair a half-dead one that I had after reading some of the TCML articles on resurrecting dead NSTs. It turned out to be about the worst mess that I've ever gotten into (and really got momma miffed for stinking up the house like tar!) and it became sure enough trash after my failed attempt to "fix" it. I ended up liquidating all of my few remaining intact NST units and directed all of my future Tesla coil related transformer acquisition attempts to the much more beefy and robust pole pigs or PTs.

As I recall he heated up the transformer on one of those fifth burners, a portable electric stovetop section, to loosen the tar around the windings. That stuff was so nasty it sounds like whatever clothes you wear should be throw-aways, and try not to get it on your skin. Once the tar was off he fixed the winding and re-potted in the same case.
