Re: [TCML] Why does this work?

Thank you Matt; You hit the nail on the head. After I found it would work I set the CW up on a much better and bigger , Primary/secondary and found it still worked with the bigger setup. I ,did, find, tho, that grounding the secondary turns out the light! Now I have to find out how big I have to build a CW to get the light to come on at 5 or 6 feet for the Maker Faire here this fall.

I think Doug has made quite a few nice SG coils already, there must be something special about this setup right Doug?

Are you missing the C in the primary LC and wondering where the RF comes from? I guess im probably not understanding it too well myself :)

Just a very poorly designed tesla coil. Not at all efficient but enough to
light a lamp.

Here is one place to start -

I am sure other people can recommend other sites that are just as good

Don't worry about being inexperienced - we all have to start somewhere.

The design is very straightforward so if you start with one of the online
calculators, you will have a significantly greater chance of success on your
first coil than if you just start throwing stuff together. Be sure to plan
to use either a beer bottle/salt water capacitor or an MMC. There are some
other kinds of capacitors that absolutely will not work even though they
seem to have the correct capacitance and voltage ratings. Search the
archives for MMC

I am too inexperienced to know that this would not work, so I
went ahead and tried it, and it worked!
Can someone explain it to me?
