Hi All,
Yes, they are "real" - useful or practical propulsion is another
matter. Using their numbers, a power to weight ratio of ~2kW/kg or 1.2 hp/lb
(gross vehicle weight),
means that a self-contained lifter power system, (generator, transformer,
rectifiers, fuel, etc.) capable of 10 KVA output would have to weigh less than 12
pounds just to lift itself, with no payload.
Under in-door laboratory conditions, it is possible to paddle a canoe
with a teaspoon. However, as practical propulsion, it would require several
orders of magnitude improvement in our "teaspoons".
Looked at another way, hot-air balloons are very real and have been
around for centuries. but using a hot-air balloon and grappling hooks to lift an
armored car is still a cartoon device only.
