Good idea.
An idea about how to verify the presence of pulsed high-voltage at
a wire with minimum energy consumption may be to use the "Avramenko
plug". The power line is connected to two diodes, one in each
direction. Across the other ends of the diodes are connected
a capacitor (a few nF) and a neon lamp in parallel. At each pulse,
some current passes through the diodes to charge the body capacitance
of the assembly, and charges the capacitor. After some pulses, the
voltage across it is high enough for a discharge through the
neon lamp, and the cycle repeats. Works even if connected to
the live side of a common power line. With high voltage, a strong
flash can be obtained by using a larger capacitor and a larger lamp.
