Subject: Power Supply for Crookes/Geissler Tubes

I have a small NST, 7500V at 20mA. If I controlled it with a variac, and put a HV diode on the output as a half wave rectifier, would it make a suitable power supply for a Crookes tube? I'm not sure how the tubes respond to power, would I need to so something additional to limit the current?

Thanks,

Curt.
