I think that the wide variety of experiences is more a reflection of the
manufacturing variability (for experience with NEW stuff), and the
provenance and previous history of used stuff.  Not to mention that the
manufacturing processes of same make, same model transformers will change
over time, as economic conditions change.  The mfrs are pretty price
sensitive and I'll bet the composition of the tar, kraft paper, wire gauge,
etc. changes in a non-obvious way from production run to production run,
and particularly over years.   

There may even be geographical differences.  I'll bet that most of the used
NSTs here in southern California haven't ever been frozen, or even
seriously wet, but they have gotten pretty hot. Small amounts of water have
a big effect on dielectric strength, degradation of winding paper and wire,
etc.
