The only person I know of who used a thyratron for a Tesla coil,
is Richard Hull.  He used it in a small magnifier.  Most 
thyratrons can't handle the bi-directional ringdown current,
so he just let a 1/2 cycle pulse though, by triggering the
thyratron with a short duration pulse.  It wasn't a VTTC
though, because a thyratron is not a vacuum tube, it's a gas
filled tube.  Richard used a hydrogen thyratron because it
can de-ionize in less than one RF half-cycle at typical TC 
frequencies.
