That may be true, but not everyone has the money, time, expertise, tools,
etc to build a solid state coil.  A spark gap coil is much simpler to
trouble shoot, and get working, and can be more reliable.

Perhaps also significant (to some of the over-40 crowd) is the aesthetic. A 
plastic monolith PSU does not appeal to everyone, just as sailplane 
enthusiasts don't often use rocket-assist take-off, and most model-T owners 
do not have turbochargers on their toys. My small horizontal tesla/oudin 
coil is still powered from a 6 V lead-acid battery through an ignition coil 
that is in a pitch-filled, dove-tailed, wooden box that has the Ford logo 
branded on the front of it. She ain't efficient, but she's real pretty.
  (My canoe doesn't have an inboard diesel either) ;-)))

     At some point, an XXXXYYZ-TC sort of ceases to be a TC, doesn't it?
