Well I can't tell too well from the photo what type of 
cap you're using for pf correction, but if it's a motor start cap,
it will run hot and can explode when used in this way.
Motor start caps are not suitable for?pf correction use.

It's necessary to use a *motor run* type cap or something similar,
these are usually in a metal case, not a black phenolic case.? The caps in 
the black cylindrical phenolic cases are usually motor start caps.

Anyhoo, after a run of about 30 to 45 seconds, I
shut it down, and made sure all was discharged,
to make further adjustments, and thats when I
found out that the power factor correction cap
(55uf, 440vac) was very warm... almost hot.
