But if you do have one, you can increase the sensitivity by looping the  wire 
to be measured around the clamp several times. Each time the wire passes  
through the clamp, it will add to the reading the same amount of current as a  
single wire passing through the clamp.
 
In other words, if your clamp-on ammeter will only measure 1 amp full scale  
on the lowest range, looping the wire back through the clamp will cause it to  
indicate .5 Amp full scale, or pass it through the clamp 10 times, and the FS 
 reading will drop to about 100 mA. 
 
This may not be the most accurate method, but it will greatly extend the  
range of even older analog meters and give you a pretty close reading. It also  
somewhat isolates the meter from the circuit.
