Re: [TCML] My first tesla coil

Tim,

It's all to do with the toroid size vs. the input power and efficiency
of the TC design. If you take any size smooth toroid, it can either produce
no sparks at all, or just one spark, or many sparks depending basically
on how much power is delivered to the toroid.

For example if you use a 4" x 13" smooth toroid and provide about
800 wallplug watts in an efficient TC, you'll get two or 3 sparks, perhaps alternating
from side to side. But if you only provide about 400 watts then you'll
get only one spark. But if you apply 1500 watts then you'll get many
simultaneious sparks all around the toroid. If you provide just 200 watts,
the sparks cannot break out and you'll get no sparks at all without
a breakout point. (just approximate wattages I'm using to give an idea.)

With a ducting corregated toroid, then you'll get multiple sparks at
somewhat lower powers due to the bumps. A breakout point can
be used to obtain just one spark. A corregated 17" toroid might act
like a 13" smooth toroid in some aspects.

Thanks for sharing Doug.

One question to the group...as I am building my new
toroid, I was under the
impression that a smooth surface like I saw with Doug's
machined toroid
would provide only 1-2 sparks but I saw many like I get on my
aluminum
ducting toroid. Is this the case also with machined
toroids?
